The National Association of State 911 Administrators has issued a warning to residents that older phones may no longer operate in early 2022 due to the retirement of 3G networks. This could include tablets, smart watches, home security systems, and medical alert devices.
Three major wireless carriers have announced their expected end dates. AT&T plans to discontinue 3G service in February, T-Mobile/Sprint between March and July, and Verizon at the end of 2022. There are a few steps you can take to reconcile this action.
Low-income individuals who are concerned about this change can apply for service through the Federal Lifeline Program. Information regarding eligibility and participating providers can be found at www.lifelinesupport.org.
If you are unsure when your 3G service may end or have not been contacted by your service provider, reach out to them to verify their expected end date.
