The City of Niles' annual Fiscal Year Budget must be approved by the Niles City Council prior to September 1st of each year. Budgets span the fiscal year period of October 1st to September 30th of the following year.
The City's Finance Department, under the management of the Finance Director, has the responsibility of ensuring all financial state and federal guidelines and regulations are followed. The Finance Director also ensures that acceptable accounting standards and principles are being used in all financial operations.
The City Administrator and department managers create individual fund and department budget drafts. The Finance Director (who is also the City Treasurer) compiles the necessary information, analyzes, computes and uses other accounting procedures to ensure the integrity of the financial data. The Finance Director works closely with city administration, other department managers and the City Council to complete the budget process before final presentation to the Council for approval.
