Water

The City has a water supply capacity of 7.6 million gallons per day. This water is pumped from city-owned wells, drawing from the deepest and purist aquifers. Currently the City only pumps an average of 2 million gallons per day, with the peak usage going up to almost 4 million gallons per day in the summer. The City has five (5) elevated water tanks and certain wells have back up generation, or motors, to be able to pump water during power outages.

A significant portion of the City of Niles' water distribution system was installed more than 50 years ago. Water reliability studies are completed from time to time so that the Utilities Department can plan for water system infrastructure improvements. Major improvements have been completed which increase the quality of the water as well as the efficiency of the water system. Included in these capital improvements were the construction of an iron filtration plant, establishment of an intermediate water pressure district on the east side of town, and the addition of water storage in the Bertrand Township Industrial Park. This water system improvement program was completed at a cost of $5.8 million. The City issued general obligation bonds to raise the funds to complete this capital improvement program. The money to support these capital improvements will come from rate increases administered over a ten (10) year period.
